BVN Rao is the Business Chairman – Transportation & Urban Infrastructure at GMR Group and serves as a Group Director on the Company’s Board. Associated with the GMR since 1989, he is one of the company’s first directors and has played a foundational role in shaping its growth across transportation, Special Economic Zones (SEZs), and EPC.
Mr. Rao holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Andhra University and brings over three decades of leadership experience spanning engineering, finance, and infrastructure development.
Prior to joining GMR Group, he built a strong foundation in banking and industrial finance through his tenure with Andhra Bank. He also served on the board of ING Vysya Limited (formerly Vysya Bank) for eight years, deepening his expertise on credit, risk management and corporate governance. This combination of engineering and financial expertise has been central to his leadership approach within the Group.
Over the years, he has held various senior responsibilities across multiple GMR businesses and serves as a Director on the GMR Group Holding Board. His contributions have spanned strategic planning, project development, institutional governance, and supporting the Group’s evolution into a diversified infrastructure platform.
In his current role, he leads the Transportation & Urban Infrastructure portfolio, overseeing transportation projects, SEZ development, and the EPC business. Under his leadership, GMR is developing two Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation (DFCC) projects, of national significance and intended to enable speedy, efficient transportation of cargo.
Through his leadership, Mr. Rao continues to contribute to India’s core infrastructure development, bringing together domain knowledge in engineering, banking and project execution to deliver sustainable, long‑term value for stakeholders and the wider economy.
